health and safety policy

Effective Date: 12th February 2025

1. Statement of Intent

As the sole practitioner of Mayfair Therapy, I am committed to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for myself, my clients, and visitors. This policy outlines the measures I will take to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other relevant legislation in Great Britain.

2. Responsibilities

2.1 Therapist (Self):

  • Conduct regular risk assessments of the rented therapy room to identify and mitigate potential hazards.

  • Ensure that the working environment is safe, clean, and free from risks to health.

  • Adhere to the health and safety regulations set by the serviced office provider (Argyll).

2.2 Building Management (Argyll):

  • Responsible for maintaining communal areas, fire safety systems, security measures, and compliance with building-wide health and safety standards.

3. Risk Assessment

A risk assessment will be conducted periodically to identify any potential hazards in the therapy room or building. Key considerations include:

  • Ensuring the room is adequately lit, ventilated, and heated.

  • Verifying that emergency exits are accessible and clearly marked.

  • Reviewing Argyll’s fire safety procedures and evacuation plans.

4. Lone Working

  • As a lone worker, I will take additional precautions to ensure safety:

  • Informing a trusted contact of my schedule when meeting clients.

  • Using a personal alarm or mobile phone for emergencies.

  • Avoiding scheduling sessions with clients who may pose a risk (e.g., those exhibiting aggressive behaviour).

5. Fire Safety

  • Familiarise myself with Argyll’s fire safety procedures, including evacuation routes and assembly points.

  • Ensure that fire extinguishers and alarms in the building are maintained by Argyll management.

6. Emergency Procedures

In case of an emergency:

  • Follow Argyll’s emergency protocols for evacuation or medical incidents.

  • Contact emergency services if required (dial 999).

7. Security

Ensure the therapy room is locked when not in use to protect confidential materials.

Follow Argyll’s security protocols for controlled access to the building.

8. Reporting Incidents

All accidents, injuries, or near-misses will be recorded in an incident logbook (maintained personally). Any significant hazards identified will be reported to Argyll management for resolution.

9. Additional Information About Premises Management

The therapy room I rent is located within a building managed by Argyll (www.workargyll.com), a serviced office provider responsible for maintaining communal facilities, life safety systems such as fire alarms and emergency lighting, and overall building maintenance. I will work in collaboration with Argyll to ensure compliance with their health and safety policies while fulfilling my own responsibilities as outlined in this policy. Argyll’s Health and Safety Policy can be read here.

10. Review of Policy

This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if there are significant changes in practice operations or legislation. By implementing this policy, I aim to provide a safe environment for all individuals accessing psychotherapy services at Mayfair Therapy.
